August 2nd-3rd, 2024
at Funhouse Commons
The first two feature films we played during our inaugural weekend were HUMMINGBIRDS and CLEANERS. Both films spoke about the beautiful and difficult aspects of being a young person, an apt theme to tie with our teen super 8 workshop. Orcas Island residents of many ages stopped by to watch these films on the basketball court of Funhouse Commons. We set out cushions, chairs and a large table of snacks for all to enjoy. Both films incited lots of laughter and buzz and many enjoyed post-film conversations about the themes discussed in the films.
Before the screening of CLEANERS, we played a short introduction recorded by the director, Glenn Barit, who spoke about his motivations for making the film and the process of usingĀ a Xerox machine to print and then hand highlight each frame of the film. Thank you to Glenn for graciously making the video and allowing us to screen CLEANERS.
After the credits rolled for CLEANERS, the audience participated in a collective SCREAM, inspired by the film. It was refreshing, inspiring and full of joy. It perfectly encapsulated a very wonderful first weekend as the Orcas Microcinema. Thank you to everyone for coming to the screenings and everyone involved in tech, setting up and breakdown and providing snacks. We hope to plan more outdoor screenings on Orcas Island in 2025.
